Be sure to mark your calendars for some upcoming events. We hope to see you at the CAS Homecoming Reunion on Oct. 28 and at our annual Taco Tuesday fundraiser for United Way on Nov. 7. Convocation is just around the corner and will be hosted on Nov. 16. Stay tuned for more on that.

Call for K-12 STEM outreach initiatives

 

The College of Arts and Sciences has many STEM outreach efforts that are flying under the radar. We now have an opportunity to showcase our STEM outreach and attract public school teachers to our efforts through a campus-wide listing of K-12 STEM initiatives.

 

The faculty fellow for expanding K-12 STEM opportunities, Dr. Susan Stansbury, has created a STEM Hub for OSU showcasing all K-12 STEM outreach efforts across campus. The STEM Hub will be showcased at a conference for all K-12 STEM educators on Nov. 1.

 

Dr. Caitlin Barnes is the college's liaison to input CAS efforts into the STEM Hub. If you have any upcoming K-12 STEM outreach initiatives you would like posted to the STEM Hub, please email Caitlin.

OSU receives $2M EPA grant to research enhanced aquifer recharge

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that geology professor Dr. Todd Halihan is the recipient of a nearly $2 million research grant to study the use and risks of enhanced aquifer recharge to improve groundwater availability and quality. Halihan and his team of researchers will collaborate with the Oka’ Institute, East Central University and Texas State University.

Contemporary Latin American exhibition at Gardiner Gallery of Art

The Gardiner Gallery of Art has opened a new exhibition featuring a group of internationally acclaimed Latin American artists. “Modos de ver/Ways of Seeing” was organized to coincide with Latin American and Hispanic Heritage month, as well as to celebrate the recent renovation of the Gardiner Gallery of Art, which was completed thanks to a gift from the Hearst Foundations.

English professor’s new book explores Appalachian childhood and loss

Dr. Sarah Beth Childers, an assistant professor in the  Department of English, has released a new book, “Prodigals, A Sister’s Memoir of Appalachia and Loss.”

 

“Prodigals” is a collection of memoirs from Childers’ upbringing in Appalachia, detailing her life with her brother before and after his suicide at age 22.

English faculty host Japanese teachers in language instruction program

This summer, the Department of English hosted 12 Japanese teachers from the Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures in a three-week program funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of State – U.S. Embassy Tokyo. The program, CLIC: Content, Language, Instruction Confluence, brought the teachers in to learn from faculty and from teachers in Stillwater Public Schools.

Integrative biology team uses machine learning in Ebola virus research

A team of researchers led by assistant professor Dr. Patrick Stephens recently unveiled critical insights into the transmission of the Ebola virus.

 

The research team published the first comprehensive study of the potential host range of Ebola viruses including every mammal species in Africa.

Pokes PodCAS: Passing the Test

CAS faculty members are bringing the classroom to inmates at the Payne County Jail. Drs. Kathryn Weinland, Melissa Mills and Eric Howerton are volunteering their time to prepare inmates for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) to earn high school diplomas. In this episode, the professors share how they got started, what they have been doing and what the future holds for this initiative.

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Kara Kerr

Dr. Kara Kerr is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology.

 

Dr. Kerr’s research uses neuroimaging methods, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
