National Center for Wellness & Recovery at OSU

NCWR is committed to saving lives and preventing addictive behavior disorders through dynamic research, medical education and innovative patient care. We are unlocking the answers to addiction and pain treatment, creating access for patients across Oklahoma and delivering hope to those suffering from addiction.

A New Location for Patient Care

Thanks to the generosity of The Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation, our addiction medicine care is now located in the new $60 million+ Legacy Plaza complex. “Our new facilities provide a beautiful place to receive high-quality, compassionate care," shares Kelly Dunn, M.D., executive director of clinical treatment. "The new location allows patients to access many of their current needs including addiction medicine, psychiatry, counseling and family medicine." This new complex is located at 5310 East 31st Street in Tulsa, and we are proud that the NCWR Addiction Recovery Clinic is making it home.

Research in Rural Care

“Rural communities have been adversely affected by the addiction crisis,” explained Julie M. Croff, Ph.D., MPH, executive director of population and clinical research at NCWR. “Compared to urban areas, individuals in rural communities are more likely to be prescribed an opioid and are less likely to have access to the addiction treatment they need.” Through community advocacy, physician education and specialized patient care in rural communities throughout Oklahoma, NCWR is working to prevent substance use disorders and improve access to vital life-saving addiction services.

Prevention Through Education

While addiction treatment initiatives are vital to saving lives, NCWR is also focused on preventing addictive behavior disorders before they start. Our experts are making addiction medicine curriculum available to medical professionals and providing resources to partners and communities across Oklahoma. Spotlight

Ashley Stephens

ATF Senior Special Agent

School of Forensic Sciences alum

OSU-CHS '19

Ashley Stephens originally thought he would become a mechanical engineer, but in the back of his mind there was always an interest in law enforcement.

“I went on a ride along with my brother-in-law who was a police officer and I was hooked. I knew then and there that I was to be in law enforcement,” Stephens said.

Stephens, who is from Tahlequah, was a police officer in his hometown while he attended Northeastern State University working toward a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Recruiters from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives came to NSU while he was a student. He applied in 2002 and was hired by the federal law enforcement agency two years later.

Stephens is now an ATF Senior Special Agent in the Tulsa Field Office with Certified Fire Investigator and Certified Explosives Specialist training. He graduated from OSU Center for Health Sciences with a Master of Forensic Sciences degree in 2019 after the university and the ATF partnered to provide graduate level training to agents who have specialized in arson or explosives.
