The OSU Foundation's annual giving event, Give Orange, wrapped up on April 5. The College of Arts and Sciences won first place in the Last Call challenge, the second place prize in the Night Owl challenge and placed second on the overall College Leaderboard. Several of our other challenges were met and exceeded. Together, we raised more than $1 million to support OSU initiatives. Thank you for your support of the college and for a great Give Orange!

Presenting in Tahiti

Department of English Regents Professor William M. Decker recently participated in a colloquium at the University of French Polynesia in Papeete, Tahiti. Decker is a recognized authority on the work of Henry Adams, an American historian, novelist, and travel writer.

The colloquium focused on the Memoirs of Arii Taimai, a work Adams wrote in collaboration with members of the Teva clan, a prominent Tahitian family with whom Adams became acquainted during his visit to Tahiti in 1891. Organized by Professor Felix Atem in cooperation with Teva descendants, the conference was as much a cultural as an academic event.

"Although considered a minor work in Adams’s extensive bibliography, the book is celebrated by contemporary Tahitian scholars as a crucial transcription of native genealogies, stories, and songs that heretofore existed exclusively as an oral tradition," Decker said. "Adams is thus credited with establishing a text foundational to the preservation of indigenous history prior to and during the first phases of European colonization."

Decker presented on the intellectual and biographical trajectories that predisposed Adams to embrace this unique cross-cultural collaboration.
