Hello CAS Faculty and Staff,

Congratulations on wrapping up another great semester! Thank you for all of your hard work educating and supporting students. The pandemic continued to make things challenging this year to say the least, but because of you, we have a large cohort of students graduating this weekend. The CAS Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Graduate Commencement Ceremony is held Friday at 7 p.m. also in GIA. The students truly value seeing their professors, advisors and mentors at graduation, so please consider donning that regalia and attending.

CAS had 4 students awarded scholarships at the Women for OSU Symposium. Congratulations to the departments of Integrative Biology, Media and Strategic Communications, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, and Psychology on the accomplishments of these student scholars.

OSU celebrated undergraduate research with the long awaited inaugural undergraduate research symposium last month. The event was originally planned for April 2020, but it had to be postposed due to the pandemic. Two years later, 180 students showcased their research and discoveries.

Kayla Reed, a triple major in Psychology, Zoology and Plant Biology, was named the Orange Gown recipient, and she will lead the CAS student processional at the commencement ceremony. Communications grad assistant, Ellie Melero, sat down with her in this month’s Pokes PodCAS. Tune in below to learn about her experience at OSU.

For those of you with children between the ages of 4-7 years old, don’t miss the opportunity to help foster your child’s love for reading through the Reading Readiness Camp, offered on campus this June from the Communications Sciences and Disorders department.

We are all affected by the Big Data Revolution, and according to Dr. Ye Liang in the Department of Statistics, big data are not immune to sampling bias, measurement errors, noises or random shocks. Learn more about his research analyzing data from electronic health records.

If you have good news to share about your research, your students, your staff or your programs, please reach out so we can help spread the word and celebrate with you.

Thanks for reading and Go Pokes!

With the recent rise of data science, more scientific disciplines are deeply involved in the revolution of big data and machine learning. Although nowadays information is abundant, big data are not immune to sampling bias, measurement errors, noises or random shocks, spurious correlation and other classical data issues. Statistical science remains a foundational role in the era of data science as per a statement by the American Statistical Association.
