OSU plant biology professor earns $330,000 grant to study tropical forests

Benedicte Bachelot didn’t expect to snag such a big grant on her first try. Bachelot, an assistant professor in the Department of Plant Biology, Ecology and Evolution, came to Oklahoma State University in August 2020. This is her first tenure track position, and this was her first time applying for a National Science Foundation grant. And she got it. “I've always been taught it is pretty rare to get funding the first time around,” Bachelot said.

McKnight Center, New York Philharmonic announce multi-year partnership, residency

The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts and the New York Philharmonic announced a three-year residency partnership which will bring the renowned orchestra to Stillwater on a regular basis. The partnership provides valuable educational opportunities for the Greenwood School of Music and Stillwater Public Schools students. Each year, the residency will include a gala event, public performances, a youth education concert and a multitude of masterclasses where students can interact with some of the world's greatest musicians.

Tips for taxpayers as filing deadline approaches

As the April 18 filing deadline approaches, there are some important items taxpayers need to keep in mind as they get ready to file their tax returns. “In general, you want to look at all the pieces that apply to you,” said JC Hobbs, OSU Extension associate specialist for farm management and taxation. “Everything that’s pertinent to you should have been received, and everything that applies to you that might get missed are the IRA deduction, education credits and the child tax credit. Those are the big things people need to be aware of.”

Here are a few things from CAS that you may have missed over the past few weeks. If we forgot something, let us know!

 

Dr. John Kinder, associate professor of History, appeared on The Takeaway podcast to talk about the history of zoos and how we allocate limited resources for zoo animals during wars, ultimately posing the question about the value of zoos.

 

Dr. Jaimie Krems, an assistant professor of Psychology, was cited in a New York Times article about friendship dynamics.

 

Dr. Kara Moore, an assistant professor of Psychology, will serve as a co-PI with a professor from the University of Arkansas on a research project to study the relationship between eyewitness confidence and accuracy across a range of variables using virtual reality. The project has earned a $670,000 National Science Foundation grant.

 

Mark Sisson, a professor in the Department of Art, Art History and Graphic Design, was featured in a recent episode of OETA's Emmy Award winning program "Gallery America."
 

Faculty Scholar Spotlight: Rachel Schmitz, Department of Sociology

Millions of Americans lack consistent and reliable access to health resources like information, care, and supplies. What do the lived realities of people enduring health inequalities look like? How do people cope with their life struggles and resist sources of oppression? Elevating marginalized people’s voices and perspectives is the catalyst for Dr. Rachel M. Schmitz’s research. Starting her research at Oklahoma State University in Fall of 2018, Dr. Schmitz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology.
