Dear CAS Faculty and Staff,

The semester is in full swing, but many things remain uncertain. We appreciate all of your hard work and cooperation thus far, and we are aware that many of you still have questions about a variety of things regarding the ongoing pandemic. In response, CAS has developed a Canvas course, “CAS Instructor Resources-Covid,” for which all instructors will receive invitations directly from Canvas. This course contains current guidance, templates and links to key resources. We will continually update this course to reflect the latest guidance from the University on how to respond to the covid situation. Our goal is that the information you need is easily accessible when you need it, without searching for pages or previous emails. We will continue to add more in the coming days and weeks.

In addition, we need to have a sense of how courses are modifying when there is a positive Covid case in the class. We have emailed department heads to ask instructors to complete a survey (also via this Qualtrics link) to inform the College and the University of your choices for temporarily modifying delivery for two weeks, per the three options laid out by the Provost last Friday. If you have already modified a course delivery due to a positive case in that class, we ask you to complete this by Friday. Then update if more courses are modified in the days and weeks ahead.

Thank you for helping us with the course updates and let us know how we can make the Canvas course more useful for you.

We would also like to remind you that Dean Glen Krutz will hold a virtual town hall this afternoon to address people's questions and provide updates on the semester. The town hall will be facilitated by Associate Dean Rebecca Brienen, and it will take place from 3-4 p.m. via Zoom. You can join the town hall using this Zoom link or by using the Meeting ID (978 5977 6551) and Passcode (352461). We encourage you to join the town hall and hope that it will provide some clarity.

Thank you,

Associate Dean Andrew Doust & Assistant Dean Amy Martindale

Department Spotlight: The Ethics Club, Philosophy

The Ethics Club was founded with the hope that a diverse array of students could disagree on issues while still understanding arguments of those who reason differently. In fact, we wanted club members to develop friendships and meaningful relationships with others who think differently. The primary vehicle by which we engage in these ethical discussions is by training and competing in Ethics Bowls — team debate-style tournaments. Our club members have flourished by participating in these competitions. We’ve had extremely shy and uncertain students develop into polished public speakers. We’ve won a regional tournament, qualified for nationals twice, and most recently reached the quarterfinals of the National Championship Bowl (top 8 in the nation for 2021). The students gain confidence not only in their oration skills, but they become better thinkers who can evaluate different opinions without becoming overly angry or defensive. Perhaps most importantly, we’ve also been fortunate enough to have members who form genuine and lasting friendships. They bond over their passion for discussing difficult topics, and they respect and admire each other—even when they strongly disagree on an issue.

In Spring 2021, OSU’s Department of Philosophy hosted the Biomedical Ethics Bowl as a virtual event. The competition was a huge undertaking but turned out to be an amazing success. We received praise from coaches and competitors, with OSU taking fourth place in the Bowl. We are excited for the future of the Ethics Club and its continued growth.
