We hope you’ve had a great first week back so far and are ready for another great semester. As the new semester begins, we wanted to remind you about all the ways CAS Outreach is here to help you.

 

CAS Outreach offers online programs, student experiences, community engagement and faculty support. Among other things, we provide communications and marketing services, a professional Multimedia Studio and professional development opportunities. Our goal is to promote the incredible work and achievements of our CAS faculty and staff members and recruit stellar students for our various CAS degree programs.

OSU chemistry professor receives $1.8 million NIH grant

Oklahoma State University Chemistry professor Jimmie Weaver received a 5-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health in February, becoming one of only six people in Oklahoma ever to receive the award. The $1.8 million will support about 3,200 hours of undergraduate research, 20 years of graduate student salaries and tuition and other costs associated with conducting research.

Garbutt named fellow of National Collegiate Honors Council

Dr. Keith Garbutt, dean of the Oklahoma State University Honors College and professor of plant biology, ecology and evolution, was recently named a fellow of the National Collegiate Honors Council. He is one of two honors professionals selected this year and is joining a select group of about 70 other honors program professionals across the country to be honored with this title.

The McKnight Center Opens Ticket Packages for 2021-2022 Season

The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts announced they have opened ticket packages for new 2021-2022 season subscribers. Packages include headliners such as Bernadette Peters, Broadway's The Buddy Holly Story and funk band Tower of Power. Season subscriptions come with benefits, like early access to sell-out events such as Tim McGraw and bundled savings of up to 20 percent compared to single event ticket prices.

Here are a few things from CAS that you may have missed over the past few weeks. If we forgot something, let us know!

 

Daniel Laó Dávila, associate professor and associate head of the Boone Pickens School of Geology, explained why earthquakes in Haiti are so devastating on KOCO 5 News.

 

President Kayse Shrum welcomed the Class of 2025 last week in her first Cowboy Kickoff freshmen convocation as president.

 

Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies professor Corinne Shwarz explained common myths about sex trafficking and gave advice for how to prevent sexual exploitation in a piece for The Conversation.

 

Microbiology and Molecular Genetics graduate students Ramee Aranda and Christian Holcomb along with Clinical Psychology graduate student Harley Layman are among the first group of students who will be sponsored by a $1.75 million training grant from the National Institutes of Health. The G-Rise grant is intended to increase diversity in the Ph.D.-trained biomedical science field.
 

Faculty Scholar Spotlight: Seth McKee, Political Science

I joined Oklahoma State University as a professor of Political Science in the summer of 2020. I am a proud OSU alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in economics. In 2005, I earned my PhD in government from the University of Texas at Austin. Before returning to my alma mater, I taught at Texas Tech University, the University of South Florida and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
