Hello CAS Faculty and Staff,

As we all prepare for the beginning of the fall semester, we wanted to take a moment to talk with you about PhilanthroPete. PhilanthroPete is OSU’s interactive crowdfunding platform. It is a way for faculty members, academic departments and student organizations to raise money for research and other projects through the power of collective giving.

PhilanthroPete has helped our fellow Cowboys and Cowgirls raise thousands of dollars for projects such as an OSU student documentary in Peru, wildlife conservation and scholarships for students in financial need. Goals for projects can range anywhere from $500 to $10,000, and many past projects have exceeded their fundraising goals. PhilanthroPete is here to help us help you finance the projects that are important to you.

If you have a project you would like to raise money for through PhilanthroPete, please come to our PhilanthroPete Info Session on Aug. 25 at 5:30 p.m. in SU 413. The deadline for Fall Project applications is Sept. 10. If you have any questions, please reach out to Anna McCrarey at amccrarey@osugiving.com.

Have a great day, and go Pokes!

Faculty Scholar Spotlight: Laura Arata, History

I study the intersections of race, gender, and popular culture in the American West. As a public historian, I am committed to making history accessible. History is all about context; by exploring the complicated and often contradictory truths embedded in legends of the Wild West, I hope to help broad audiences ask deeper questions about these time-honored stories.

I have witnessed the power of learning to ask such questions in my own life. I grew up on a working ranch, where it was easy to believe the Wild West had been a real place.
