CAS faculty and staff, With the announcement of Dr. Mark Fishbein as the new head of the Department of Plant Biology, Ecology and Evolution, we now have the complete list of department heads for the upcoming academic year. Dr. Scott Gelfand is returning as head of the Department of Philosophy, where Dr. Doren Recker will be the interim head while Dr. Gelfand is on sabbatical for the fall semester. And Lt. Col. Bo Reynolds is taking over the Department of Military Science (Army ROTC). As we've said before, CAS is fortunate to have great leadership across the college, including at the head of each department. I also want to underscore how important it is for your events to be listed on the calendars for OSU, CAS and your department. This will grow the audience for these events and increase the visibility of what is going on in your department. If we forgot something, let us know! | • | Psychology professor Jaimie Arona Krems' recent article "Why do women still get judged so harshly for having casual sex?" was the second most read piece by OSU authors on The Conversation during the month of May with over 47,000 reads in just a week after its publication. It was only topped for the month by our previously featured Mario Borunda article, "Warp drives: Physicists give chances of faster-than-light space travel a boost." That exceeded 165,000 reads throughout the month. |
| • | Garth Brooks (a CAS alum) was the subject of a Washington Post feature in May, in a lead-up to him receiving the Kennedy Center Honor in Washington, D.C. Read the article here. |
| • | OSU's new director of dance, Emma Draves, choreographed the Spring 2021 dance concert in late May, which featured live music and dancing from a wide array of artists at OSU. Unlike typical performances, it was an outdoor festival presented around OSU's campus. |

Faculty Scholar Spotlight: Karen Wozniak, Microbiology
|
Dr. Karen Wozniak of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics has always been interested in science, and decided on microbiology after taking AP Biology in high school. As an undergraduate, she became more interested in immunology and parasitology. In graduate school, she joined a lab studying immune responses towards fungal pathogens, and she has been hooked ever since. |
