The history of Bedlam competition is a little bit like the origin of the word. Originally, Bedlam was the truncated name of an infamous asylum for the insane in London, England, the Hospital of St. Mary’s of Bethlehem, known for its chaos and clamor. It is defined as a place or situation of noisy uproar and confusion. According to Athletic Director, Harry Birdwell, the term was first used by a journalist to describe the atmosphere at an OU vs. OSU wrestling match. The term stuck, and began to have a life of its own, eventually coming to describe the full-blown rivalry between the two schools. Probably, this reputation came in no small part due to the “rowdy” nature of Gallagher-Iba Arena, a notoriously difficult place for visiting teams to retain their sanity. Coming up Wednesday is the first Bedlam men’s basketball game, to be played in Gallagher-Iba Arena at 7:00 PM. Be there to help drive the Sooners insane! If you are too far away to attend, the game will be televised on ESPN+. Although many people are aware of the rivalry, fewer are familiar with the traveling trophy associated with the competition (pictured above). We were unable to locate history of the crystal “Bedlam Bell,” so we are asking our alumni to provide information. Send your facts, figures or legends to info@orangeconnection.com. You can check out the status of this year’s competition at the web pages maintained by the Bedlam sponsor http://www.bestinoklahoma.com/bedlam/default.htm"Ford Dealers of Oklahoma."

OSU Comes Through for the Angel Tree
Wednesday, December 17, 2003 (103 reads)

OSU's angels came through in a big way this year, making sure Christmas will be good for 350 area families. All but six of 350 cards for the Non-Traditional Student Organization Angel Tree found sponsors, and the OSU Bookstore picked up the rest. The drive has grown from 63 Angel cards three years ago to 350 this year. Included in the donations were more than 12 tricycles and several bicycles. A couple of OSU students "really" got into the spirit and bought $400 worth of toys. You can see some pics at http://www2.okstate.edu/pio/angeltree.html

DALLAS, Dec. 9, 2003 – Less than two days after Selection Sunday and the 68th SBC Cotton Bowl Classic, pitting Ole Miss against Oklahoma State on Friday, Jan. 2, is officially a sellout. “We knew that Oklahoma State and Ole Miss would bring huge crowds, but tickets went even faster that we could have expected,” Fin Ewing, III, SBC Cotton Bowl Chairman, said. “The stadium will be a site to see with all the orange and red, and we’re thrilled to have the Cowboys and the Rebels coming to Dallas.” Oklahoma State accepted the SBC Cotton Bowl’s invitation on Sunday, and in the process, agreed to take 22,500 tickets for alums. Those tickets were snatched up by Monday afternoon. Ole Miss was announced as the SEC representative last Wednesday. The Rebels allotment of 17,500 tickets was gone by Monday. This year’s Classic will mark the first meeting between Oklahoma State and Ole Miss. The Cowboys, 9-3, are making their second appearance at the Cotton Bowl, and their first since 1945. Mississippi last appeared in the Cotton Bowl in 1962. Ole Miss, led by senior quarterback Eli Manning, comes to Dallas as SEC West co-champions with a 9-3 record and a 7-1 conference mark. The Rebels are ranked No. 16 in the latest Associated Press Poll. Mississippi is appearing in their sixth bowl game in seven years. The Cowboys, ranked 21st nationally in the AP Poll, bring a crew of nationally recognized players to Dallas, including wide receiver Rashaun Woods, an AFCA first team All-America. Woods led OSU to a 9-3 conference record and had a third straight 1,000-yard season, shattering every OSU receiving record in the process. Kickoff for the 2004 SBC Cotton Bowl is set for 1 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on FOX. PRESS RELEASE COURTESY OF THE COTTON BOWL

State Regents Adopt Next Legislative Agenda
Monday, December 08, 2003 (120 reads)

The State Regents have adopted a legislative agenda that calls for an increase in state funding to offset the $37.4 million reduction the state system experienced from last year to this year, as well as to cover the increased costs of a 4 percent enrollment growth. They also would like to restore funding for costs associated with the Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant program, the Academic Scholars program and the Summer Academies for Math and Science. All were cut in May because of lower state appropriations. Officials estimate it would take at least $141 million just to restore the per-student funding to the FY2000 level. You can get more details at http://www.okhighered.org/news-center/2004legislative-agenda.html
