Bride Builds Scholarship Endowment
Tuesday, November 29, 2005 (160 reads)

Cara Cowan is not your average bride. Though very level-headed, some of her fellow soon-me-missus’ may think she’s more crazy. Cara agreed to forego gravy boats, coffeemakers and other highly demanded wedding gifts in lieu of increasing her family’s endowed scholarship for Native American students at Oklahoma State University [OSU]. “Rather than registering for stuff I won’t use or don’t need, [fiancé] Doug and I are designating non-profits for folks to donate to in honor of our marriage,” said Cowan. Honoring their parents’ commitment to education and challenging fellow tribe members to attain an excellent education, young alumni and siblings Brett and Cara Cowan established the Beverly and Clarence “Curly” Cowan Endowed Scholarship Fund for Native American engineering students at OSU in Sept 2001 at the tender ages of 26 and 28, respectively. “Almost everything in our lives centered around education, and Cara and I knew the best way to honor our parents’ retirement would be to help other Native American students obtain their degree,” said Brett. Education has always been a central part of the Cowan family - even during mealtimes. “I remember instances where we would do math word problems on napkins as our family was eating dinner at Mazzio’s,” said daughter Cara. That commitment to education, resonated with Cara and Brett over the years. Among them, the Cowans hold 10 degrees from OSU. Cara earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1997 and a master’s degree in telecommunications management in 2002. Brett holds bachelor’s (1999) and master’s (2000) degrees in civil engineering. Beve and Curly achieved both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and share a combined 70 years of teaching experience. All are active participants in the Cherokee Nation where Cara serves as an elected Tribal Council Representative for Rogers County. A recent report issued by Black Issues in Higher Education ranked OSU as the No. 2 producer for all American Indian bachelor degrees combined in the nation with 1,662 American Indian students enrolled at OSU in 2005. The Cowans hope that their gift will continue to give hope to and inspire future Native America students. While these numbers illustrate an obvious need to further educate Oklahoma’s minorities, the efforts of the Cowan children continue to give hope to future Native American students. “When great leaders come along, you try to do everything you can to support them,” said Jovette Dew, Multicultural Engineering Coordinator. “It’s leaders like Brett & Cara who see an unmet need and find a way to leave a dramatic imprint on future minority students.” While few recent graduates endow scholarships at such a young age, even rarer is the Cowans’ dedication to their gift. “My experiences at OSU helped me realize how much I enjoy the small-town environment, and solidified my desire to stay in state and make a better life for others,” remarked Cara. The Cowan scholarship is available to any student from Seminole High School, Rogers County or Sequoyah County who is Native American and majors in Engineering at OSU. Cara Cowan and Doug Watts will exchange vows Nov. 19 in Claremore. Other charities benefiting from their generosity include: the American Diabetes Association, the American Indian Science & Engineering Society, the Cherokee Heritage Center, the Cherokee Nation Education Corp. and the Rogers Cherokee Association. In light of growing concerns about pedestrian safety, a high-traffic section of Monroe Street through the Oklahoma State University campus will be restricted weekdays beginning November 21. The segment of Monroe Street from the PIO Building north drive ( Parker Lane) to Athletic Avenue south of the Agriculture Building will be closed Monday through Friday between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to all motor traffic except emergency vehicles and OSU Transit and Physical Plant vehicles. Drummond Lane access to and from Monroe will also be closed during the restricted hours. “Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and other campus pedestrians,” said OSU System CEO and President David Schmidly. “As pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Monroe Street has grown, we have become increasingly concerned with safety. These changes allow us to make Monroe safer immediately as the university explores possible long-term solutions as part of the campus master plan.” Barricades manned by student cadets will block unauthorized traffic at both Monroe Street locations. Blocking this section of Monroe Street does not restrict access to those authorized to park in any of the campus parking lots along Monroe Street. “We’ve come up with a plan that provides increased safety for pedestrians, while allowing access to parking for faculty and staff,” Schmidly said. “We would encourage pedestrians to cross Monroe in this new restricted zone when possible. And because Monroe will no longer be a through street on weekdays, drivers should avoid Monroe except for authorized parking or official business.” Monroe Street divides much of the university’s on-campus housing from the academic core. Interaction between pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle traffic on the street, particularly during class changes at the bottom of each hour, has steadily grown as a safety issue. This change is a return to a daytime vehicle restriction policy lifted in the late 1980s. Signs announcing the changes have been posted on Monroe Street and elsewhere. Educators Leave $265K For OSU Basketball Scholarship
Tuesday, November 15, 2005 (115 reads)

The late Willard and Wanda Roberts’ devotion to education and love of “Mister Iba Basketball” will benefit Oklahoma State University basketball athletes for many generations through a $265,000 bequest recently received from the couple’s estate. The Willard and Wanda Roberts Endowed Basketball Scholarship for student athletes will provide financial support for a member of the OSU’s men’s basketball team once it’s fully endowed at $400,000. “Planned gifts are very special as they are one of the ways people leave their legacy in this world when they depart. We are honored that this special couple chose OSU as a place to express their passion by creating an enduring gift that will provide both academic and athletic opportunities for future OSU students,” noted Kirk Jewell, OSU Foundation President and CEO. After graduating from Dale High School, Willard accepted a scholarship on the OSU men’s basketball team from Coach Henry Iba, where he built a reputation as a hard worker and successful player. Putting his basketball career on hold, Willard served in the Navy during World War II, teaching literacy to recruits in Virginia. Returning to then Oklahoma A&M on the same basketball scholarship Coach Iba offered before the war, Willard graduated in 1948 with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education, health and human performance. The Roberts committed their lives to educating children, teaching in Oklahoma and South Pasadena, Calif. schools. Throughout his career, Willard served as a teacher, coach, counselor and principal. He was the first principal at both Townsend Elementary and Del City High School in the Oklahoma City area. Wanda taught English in many of the same schools as her husband. The couple retired in Shawnee in 1981. Willard passed away in September 2001 and Wanda in September 2003. The Roberts bequest is the eighth endowed scholarship benefiting men’s basketball. OSU is grateful to the Roberts family, and their generous gift will allow the university to assist Cowboy student athletes for generations to come. The Oklahoma State University Foundation serves as the private fundraising organization for OSU, as designated by the OSU Regents. Its mission is to unite donor and university passions and priorities to achieve excellence. STILLWATER -- With two million more people than the state of Oklahoma, the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area has been selected as the site for the first out-of-state regional office for Oklahoma State University. OSU administrators and area alumni unveiled the Dallas office at opening ceremony and celebration on Nov. 7. “We selected Dallas as the first site for a regional office because Dallas/Fort Worth is our largest out-of-state market for current students and has unlimited potential for growth,” said OSU System CEO and President David J. Schmidly. “We’re excited to offer Texas a ‘brighter orange’. With nearly six million people, and located only 270 miles from Stillwater, the Dallas/Fort Worth area is a natural market for OSU.” This year’s OSU enrollment includes 1,669 Texas students, including 615 students from the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The OSU Dallas Regional Office at Dallas Lincoln Centre, located in Suite 390 at 5420 L.B.J. Freeway, will house two full-time recruiters who will work with students who want more information about attending OSU. Also working from the suite will be Kathy Wilson, who will represent the OSU Foundation, OSU Alumni Association and Career Services. “Our regional office will strengthen our recruiting, fund raising, career services and alumni efforts in the Dallas/Fort Worth area,” Schmidly said. “Various areas of the university will partner to strengthen our ability to show everything OSU has to offer the people of North Texas.” In a letter to OSU, Dallas mayor Laura Miller said, “It is an exciting day for us – we recognize that a world-class city needs to have a strong presence from world-class universities – and I believe that OSU opening recruiting and alumni offices in our city is a step in the right direction.” The investment in the Dallas office has been needed for some time, Schmidly said, due to the large numbers of alumni and students in the area. According to the latest figures of the OSU Alumni Association, nearly 11,000 active OSU alumni live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, a number that continues to increase each year. OSU also awards a significant amount of scholarship aid to students from the Dallas/Fort Worth area each year, according to Ivy, with area students averaging approximately $3,455 a year in scholarship funds. Dr. Amjad Ayoubi, director of OSU Career Services, sees this expansion as an opportunity to diversify the employment base for OSU students from Texas who return to their home state after graduation and seek employment in the area. “Our plans include diversifying our employer base in the area, and we have launched an ambitious project to recruit 3,000 new employers to hire our students,” he said. “This office will allow us to continue to expand our relationships with employers in the area, including our long-term relationship with the defense industry.” A new chapter of the OSU Parents Association is set to begin this fall in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Fran Gragg, coordinator of the association, has been working for several months with parents of OSU students from the Dallas area, many of whom are OSU alumni themselves. “We have had numerous requests from parents of current students and alumni with children who plan to attend OSU in the future, who want a stronger connection to OSU in Texas, and have asked us to set up a chapter,” she said.

OSU to Build Athletic Village
Tuesday, November 08, 2005 (111 reads)

OSU is working to buy property on which to construct an athletic village, it announced Friday. The property, which covers about 100 acres and is north of the current athletic buildings on Hall of Fame Avenue, will also free additional space for the university, which may be used for student housing and parking needs. “We have some very successful athletic programs and this expansion will improve our ability to compete in the future,” OSU President David Schmidly said in a press release. “It also allows us to consolidate all athletic facilities in one area, which provides space to meet other university needs.” Once the property is acquired, the building could take several years to complete and would require additional financing. Oklahoma State University will be presenting its Campus Master Plan to the OSU Board of Regents for preliminary approval in December. The plan will guide university growth for the next five to 20 years.

The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets announced that they have acquired guard/forward Desmond Mason, an unprotected 2006 first round draft pick and cash considerations from Milwaukee in exchange for center Jamaal Magloire. "In Desmond, we get both a defensive stopper and another perimeter scoring option," said Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower. "At the same time, this trade helps us prepare for the future by acquiring that first round pick." Mason averaged a career-high 17.2 points to go along with 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists last season with the Bucks. The 6-5 swingman also notched career highs in starts (71) and minutes per game (36.2). "Desmond had a breakout year for the Bucks last season and I look forward to him continuing to develop his game here with us," said Hornets Head Coach Byron Scott. "His skills and athletic ability fit perfectly into our offense, so I'm excited to get him on the court and have him start learning our system." Mason is entering his sixth NBA season and holds career averages of 12.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 395 games. Mason began his career in Seattle after being selected by the Sonics with the 17th overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft. He was traded to Milwaukee along with Gary Payton in exchange for Ray Allen, Kevin Ollie, Ronald Murray and a conditional first round pick in February 2003. The former Oklahoma State standout finished his collegiate career in fourth place on the Cowboys' all-time list for scoring, rebounding and steals. He was named First Team All-Big 12 as a senior.
