For the first time in 11 years, OSU’s chemical engineering students finished first in two divisions of a nationwide contest. The students were informed in August that they had placed first in the design contest, and on Sept. 19, they were notified of their first place finish in the health and safety division. The Oklahoma State University School of Chemical Engineering has competed in the national plant design contest for 11 years and placed first overall four times. Professors in the School of Chemical Engineering select two teams to compete in the national contest. These teams compete against teams from 160 undergraduate chemical engineering departments across the nation. “Through the competition, students get validation of what they’re learning and their quality of education because they compete against all the chemical engineering schools in the country,” said Jan Wagner, professor in the School of Chemical Engineering. Members of the OSU winning team will present their design solution to a national body of engineers and professors at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ annual meeting on Oct. 30 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Justin Guinn, Robert Taylor and Tim Plowman were the 2005 winning team members. “I couldn’t believe we really won,” said Guinn, a chemical engineering senior. “I didn’t expect it at all.” Guinn will graduate in December with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering and a minor in chemistry. Taylor and Plowman graduated in May. Taylor is a regulatory compliance engineer for the Exxon Mobil Corp. in Houston. Plowman works as an applications engineer in processing and treating for the Hanover Co. in Broken Arrow. Their task was to address global warming by designing a composition that would remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Their design trapped carbon dioxide by using reactants. After the carbon dioxide was trapped, it was disposed into the ground. Wagoner said the students’ design was grounded in fundamentals and had a clear method of completeness. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers sponsors the design contest. Every year the institute sends a packet with details of a problem and the regulations of the contest to every chemical engineering program in the nation. All programs are eligible to submit two design solutions to the national competition. The professors of chemical engineering design courses make the decision to submit the designs. Students are given 30 days to come up with a solution to the problem. During these 30 days, the students cannot receive any type of assistance from members of the faculty or staff. Among the three of them, Guinn, Taylor and Plowman put 289 hours of lab time into developing their design. “It says a lot when you can spend 16 straight hours together in lab,” Plowman said. “Justin and Robert were both great teammates.” The American Institute for Chemical Engineers selects a panel of judges for the contest, including experienced chemical engineers in the industry and academia. The designs are judged anonymously. They are calculated on a 100-point scale. Designs can receive up to 50 percent on the communications aspects and 50 percent on the technical aspects. “One of the reasons for the team’s success is their ability to effectively communicate and present their solutions,” said Rob Whiteley, associate professor in the OSU School of Chemical Engineering. On Oct. 30, Guinn, Taylor and Plowman will take an expense-paid trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, thanks to alumni contributions, the Exxon Mobil Corp. and the Hanover Co. In Cincinnati, they will receive the William A. Cunningham Award. They will also have 35 minutes to present their design solution to a group of engineers and professors and respond to their questions. “Recognizing that the first prize rewards the winner with an intimidating experience, many students are happier to have taken second place in the competition,” said Russell Rhinehart, head of the School of Chemical Engineering. “But, we are confident that Robert, Tim and Justin are prepared for the meeting.”

OSU-OKC Students Make History with New African American Student Association (OKLAHOMA CITY) - OSU-Oklahoma City students have formed the campus’ first African-American Student Association (AAA). The mission of AAA is to encourage a positive educational experience among African-American students and to educate the campus and community about African-American culture. Any OSU-OKC student is eligible for membership. Club officers include President Alexis Thompson, Vice President Ty Mechian, Secretary/Treasurer Danielle Berry, Parliamentarian Floyd Renfrow, Historian Charity Williams and Activities Coordinator Marchella Dennis. “I hope AAA will bring recognition of OSU-OKC's African American students and encourage support and participation of students and our community,” said Thompson, president of AAA. “Many people helped make this dream of creating the first-ever AAA on campus a reality. We are making history and I am excited to be the president of such an outstanding club.” The club already has several activities planned including a bake sale, participation in the OSU-OKC annual Halloween Blast and upcoming events for African-American Heritage Month in February. “We are thrilled to have this association added to our student clubs,” stated Dr. Paula Willyard, OSU-OKC vice president of Student Services. “With over 800 African-American students on our campus, we believe that this will be one of our more active student organizations.” OSU-Oklahoma City currently has over 25 clubs and organizations. Student organizations are established, organized and run by students with the support of faculty and staff advisors and the Student Activities Office.
