OSU Athletes Graduating in Record Numbers
Friday, October 29, 2004 (138 reads)

NCAA figures released this month show the graduation rate for OSU student athletes is up 20 percent from the last reporting period and exceeds that of the general OSU student population. OSU student-athletes who entered school in Fall 1997 had a graduation rate of 60 percent, compared to a 40 percent rate at the end of the last reporting period in 1996. The NCAA's 2004 Division I report says the 60 percent graduation rate in OSU athletics compares to 58 percent for the general OSU student body. In addition, OSU's football athletes had a graduation rate of 87 percent. Thirteen of 15 football players who entered as freshmen in 1997 graduated. This means OSU athletes have moved up to fourth in the Big 12 Conference in graduation rates, overall, and are second only to Baylor in football graduation rates. Baylor football players beat OSU by only one percent. Read more at http://www2.okstate.edu/pio/athletegrad04.html

By JIM SALTER, Associated Press Writer October 23, 2004 COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- The final 50 seconds of the first half turned the game around for No. 22 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys fell behind by 17 then rallied to beat Missouri 20-17 on a 28-yard field goal by Jason Ricks with 55 seconds to play. ``There was never any time that I didn't believe that this team was not going to have the resolve to come back,'' Oklahoma State coach Les Miles said. The Cowboys (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) drove 78 yards to set up the winning kick. The drive was kept alive when Donovan Woods connected with his brother, D'Juan Woods, for a 27-yard gain on third-and-4 from the Oklahoma State 42. Missouri (4-3, 2-2) lost its second straight game and ended a nine-game home winning streak. The Tigers appeared headed for an easy win after going ahead 17-0 with 54 seconds left in the first half. But the Tigers allowed Oklahoma State to drive 80 yards in 50 seconds, scoring on a 12-yard pass from Woods to Woods with 4 seconds left in the half. ``It was very important,'' tailback Vernand Morency said. ``It let us come into the locker room just with that extra fight.'' The Cowboys are now looking forward to hosting their Bedlam Matchup with rivals the OU Sooners.

Dr. Kent Olson, OSU professor of economics, says approval of State Question 708 will mean that the state's Rainy Day Fund will be used more selectively to help with real emergencies. In a column published in the Sunday Oklahoman, Olson says approval of the question will ensure that money from the fund will be used only for bona fide emergencies and that lawmakers will be able to use a smaller percentage of the fund each time, leaving more for financial emergencies that stretch over several years.
