Oklahoma State University Partners with UDLA, UPAEP to Open Mexico Offices
Tuesday, September 12, 2006 (235 reads)

In an effort to expand learning and student exchange between Oklahoma and Mexico, Oklahoma State University has joined with two major Mexico universities to open liaison offices in Puebla.

The Universidad de las Americas (UDLA) and the Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP) are partnering with OSU to launch the OSU Mexico Liaison Office.  OSU is hosting a reception today in Puebla to celebrate the opening of the office.

“It is our hope this office will not only help in the recruitment of students to Oklahoma and OSU but also develop and support expanded cultural and business exchanges between Mexico, the OSU System and the state of Oklahoma,” said David J. Schmidly, OSU System CEO and President.

The office is the brainchild of Schmidly, who has done extensive research in Mexico.  In fact, a species of deer mouse -- the Peromyscus schmidlyi, which is found in the pine oak forests of the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains in west central Mexico – was named after the OSU President.

“Mexico is a special place and it is important for OSU to have a presence there,” Schmidly said.  “We are excited about this opportunity to partner with our neighbors to facilitate and expand ongoing relationships, as well as develop new programs, partnerships and exchanges between OSU and Mexico.”

OSU Student Becomes World Traveler
Tuesday, September 05, 2006 (270 reads)

Oklahoma State University business senior Tyler Schooley visited 25 countries the past six months, helping to build undeveloped villages, exploring unpopular cities and learning more about different cultures.

Schooley’s international experiences began three years ago when he participated in a language immersion program, where he spent a month with a Guatemalan family immersed in Latin American culture and learning Spanish.

“The Guatemala trip opened my eyes to the beauty of the world and awoke a passion for traveling I didn’t know I had,” he said.

While hundreds of OSU students participate every year in study abroad programs, Schooley devoted his college career to visiting underdeveloped nations and places that don’t receive many tourists. His most recent trip began in January and ended in July.

He went to Congo, one of the poorest countries in the world, and spent two weeks building houses in a small village.

“The local people taught me about valuing life and gave me a different perspective on the world,” Schooley said. “After the trip I knew my mission was to help people around the world.”

OSU-Okmulgee’s TRiO Program Helps Students
Tuesday, September 05, 2006 (202 reads)

The TRiO Program staff at OSU-Okmulgee help students successfully earn a college degree by ensuring they learn good study skills, develop life skills, become active on campus and make friends.  TRiO is a federally sponsored program that provides educational opportunities for low income, first generation college students and disabled Americans.  The TRiO program is provided at no cost to students who meet one of the criteria.

Tim Kreps, TRiO Project Director, says the staff’s goal is to ensure students stay in college and graduate.  TRiO staff provides tutoring, academic and personal advisement as well as organizes social and cultural activities.

“When students make a social connection to other students and get involved in organizations and entertainment activities, they are more likely to feel like they belong at college and stay here through tough times instead of dropping out,” says Kreps.

TRiO staff also assists with scholarship searches, helps students complete FAFSA forms and assists them with transfers to other universities to complete a baccalaureate degree.
