Thanks to a new transit service, parking is one less thing students and Stillwater residents have to worry about. August 18, 2003 marked the beginning of the OSU-Stillwater Community Transit Service. Six routes with stops at several apartment complexes and key locations throughout the Stillwater community have been set up. On campus routes are also available every 15 minutes. The goal of the new system is to help reduce the number of cars on campus and the stress of trying to find a parking place. To find individual routes, times or locations, visit the OSU Police Web site at http://www.osupd.okstate.edu. Story by Melissa Majors, OSUAA Communications Intern

Enrollment Grows at Oklahoma State University
Wednesday, August 27, 2003 (135 reads)

President Schmidly announced this week that enrollment at Oklahoma State University is up 17 percent from the previous year. This year’s freshman class will approach 3,500, an increase of five percent over last year’s class. In addition, 2,200 international students from nearly 120 different nations will join the student body of OSU this semester. In response to the rising number of students, 40 new faculty members have been hired and research funding continues to increase. Indirect cost collections are up $750,000 over last year. Private giving is also increasing. The OSU Foundation reports that private gift commitments this year total $42.8 million, which is significantly higher than last year. With so many other facets of OSU growing, it is no wonder that the Greek life at OSU is growing as well. Six hundred eighteen women were admitted to pledge to a sorority this year. This number is the highest the Panhellenic Council has seen in some time. Angie Batchelder, coordinator at Greek Life, says this growth comes as no shock. “We have been seeing growth in recruitment every year for the past four years,” said Batchelder. “It has been really exciting because Greek membership nationwide is not growing as well as it has been at OSU.” From Greek life to enrollment, to donations and construction, it seems everything is growing at OSU. In a letter to faculty earlier this week, Schmidly stated that he is proud of the growth of our university. “I could not be more proud of the direction in which the university is going and of the accomplishments of our faculty and staff,” he said. The OSU Alumni Association is proud to announce that construction has begun on the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center, with the clearing and preparation of the building site. The center, which will be located west of Old Central and east of the Student Union, will offer a visible home for alumni on campus. In addition, it will provide a place to acknowledge achievements of OSU alumni, accommodate dining and meeting experiences for alumni and the university, and will house programs and the staff of the Alumni Association. It is estimated that more than a quarter of a million people will visit the Alumni Center annually for exhibits, events, concerts on the lawn, receptions and football game activities. The 52,000 square feet, $13 million project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2005. Meanwhile, your Alumni Association would like to invite you to join us on Oct. 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. for the official groundbreaking ceremony.
