By John Helsley Staff Writer Daily Oklahoman Danny Williams, a basketball recruit due for a visit to Oklahoma State, lies in a coma at a California hospital following a car wreck Tuesday morning. Williams was scheduled to fly to Stillwater on Wednesday with his AAU coach Rick Isaacs. First, however, he was to drive his girlfriend to Las Vegas, where her grandfather was due out of surgery Tuesday afternoon. They never made it. Williams fell asleep at the wheel of her Isuzu Trooper, which rolled several times, throwing her from the vehicle and leaving him pinned inside with a fractured skull on Interstate 15, just north of Barstow, Calif. Fortunately, a trauma-unit helicopter, with a neuro-surgeon onboard, was flying nearby after tending to the scene of another accident. Those inside witnessed Williams' wreck, then rushed to the scene. After workers freed Williams with the "Jaws of Life," he had to be resuscitated at the scene. Both he and his girlfriend were flown to Loma Linda (Calif.) University Hospital. There were conflicting reports of whether seat belts were in use. The girlfriend suffered substantial injuries to her body but is expected to recover, Isaacs said. The immediate prognosis for Williams wasn't as optimistic. "The next 24 hours are critical," Isaacs said. "But the kid is too tough to die like this. He may die jumping over a backboard, but not like this." OSU coaches are aware of the situation and concerned, yet are prohibited from talking about prospective recruits. Williams is a 6-foot-3 player ranked as the No. 5 shooting guard and the No. 21 prospect overall as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com. He played at Freemont High in Los Angeles. Isaacs and Williams were scheduled to fly out of Los Angeles at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday. But when Isaacs hadn't heard from his star recruit by midday Tuesday, he worried that something was wrong. Isaacs said doctors were monitoring Williams closely, hoping for necessary immediate improvement.

Oklahoma State University's Harry Birdwell announced today he would step down at the end of this year as Athletic Director, a post he has held for three years. "This was a difficult decision, but after much thought and prayer, my wife Cindy and I have decided it is the right decision for us," Birdwell said. "I love OSU and I am proud of what we have accomplished. However, my family and I believe it is time to pursue other dreams and opportunities for personal growth." Once he steps down as AD at the end of this year, Birdwell will continue as a consultant for the athletic department for another six months, assisting with fundraising for the football stadium and other athletic projects. Schmidly said the university would evaluate its needs and determine its next steps for hiring a new athletic director at the appropriate time. The fact Birdwell will remain in his position for more than six months as athletic director and then has agreed to serve as a consultant means OSU has ample time to address the matter. Visit the OSU Athletics http://www.okstate.com"Web site" for more information on Birdwell’s resignation.

Oklahoma State University Receives $2M Gift From ConocoPhillips; Student, professors & alumni to benefit from funds STILLWATER, OK - Oklahoma State University [OSU] announced today gifts totaling $2 million from ConocoPhillips to benefit more than 30 campus units. The check was presented recently to OSU System CEO and President David Schmidly and other key officials by Gene Batchelder, ConocoPhillips Senior Vice President of Services, Chief Information Officer and ’69 OSU Accounting alumnus. “Students, parents, alumni, and friends of OSU are very aware of the tremendous impact that ConocoPhillips has made on the entire OSU System,” said Schmidly. “We cannot thank everyone at ConocoPhillips enough for their genuine interest in the continued success of OSU.” A long-time proponent of higher education, ConocoPhillips has given over $21 million to OSU and remains the university’s largest corporate donor. “ConocoPhillips’ generous investment in The State’s University strengthens a longstanding relationship between OSU and one of Oklahoma’s premier corporate citizens,” said Schmidly. “As the company that hires more OSU graduates than any other, ConocoPhillips’ leadership and valuable support will help educate and inspire new generations of leaders to achieve greatness.” "Oklahoma State University prepares leaders for ConocoPhillips; graduates who continue to elevate our direction and accomplishments as a company," said Batchelder. "These gifts will help ensure beneficial outcomes for both OSU and ConocoPhillips for years to come.” Funds were allocated as follows: $165,000 - College of Engineering, Architecture & Technology; $205,000 - Spears School of Business; $80,000 - Arts & Sciences; $1 million - pledge payment for ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center; $400,000 - ConocoPhillips S.P.I.R.I.T. Scholars Program; and $150,000 - Miscellaneous Support. The funds will support a variety of academic endeavors such as scholarships, endowed chairs, visiting speakers, graduate studies, equipment purchases, career services, multicultural development and other academic projects. The ConocoPhillips S.P.I.R.I.T. [Safety, People, Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation, Teamwork] Scholars Program helps prepare students to not only be successful in the business world, but also to become effective corporate leaders. While scholarships alone can make a significant impact, the S.P.I.R.I.T. scholars program serves as a flagship to corporate/university relations by adding enrichment activities such as visits to executive board rooms and ConocoPhillips facilities as well as the enhancement of personal leadership skills that make the experience significant for ConocoPhillips and students. “Visionary corporate supporters like ConocoPhillips recognize the benefit of increasing the skill level and number of qualified graduates entering tomorrow’s workforce,” said Kirk Jewell, OSU Foundation President and CEO. “OSU continues to be enormously grateful for ConocoPhillips’ generosity and the valuable partnership this corporate leader has created with Oklahoma State University.” The ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center is slated for completion at the end of June with a grand opening date to the public on Sept. 3. The new building will stand as one of the most visible signs of ConocoPhillips’ generosity to OSU.
