Oklahomans can experience the state’s rich and colorful history June 5-9 at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. “Celebrating a Centennial: 100 Years of Oklahoma Heroes” is the theme for this year’s living history program, which is presented by the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa.

This year’s Chautauqua will feature scholar performers portraying Will Rogers, Kate Barnard, Frank Frantz, Lynn Riggs and Waite Phillips. Appearing in costume, the scholars recount stories in the character's own words and in the language of their time.

Simon Named Finalist For Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award
Wednesday, May 16, 2007 (117 reads)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Oklahoma State outfielder Keanon Simon has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the Baseball Division of the 2007 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

The award, which recognizes the outstanding senior student athlete in six NCAA sports, is in its first year for baseball. It will be presented annually to an NCAA Division I senior baseball player who excels both on and off the field.

Finalists were selected from a list of 30 candidates based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete. While on-the-field performance thus far during the college baseball season was a factor in determining the finalists, the criteria also includes a high emphasis on the classroom, character and community service.

“These ten players are not only among the nation’s best college baseball players, they are remarkable students and community members who have worked hard to accomplish great things both on and off the field,” said Bob Gfeller, Lowe’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Advertising. “Lowe’s is proud of its affiliation with the NCAA and college athletics, and we are pleased to help honor these individuals who have displayed a commitment to excellence as true student-athletes.”

Simon, who plays center field for the Cowboys, is hitting .331 this season with three home runs and 19 RBIs. He ranks second on the club with four triples and 10 stolen bases. In the classroom, the physical education major carries a 3.4 overall G.P.A. and is a three-time, first-team Academic All-Big 12 Conference selection.

The 10 finalists will be placed on a ballot for a nationwide vote beginning May 10 and concluding June 6. Fan balloting will be available on the award’s official website, www.seniorclassaward.com, and will be combined with votes from coaches, media and sponsors to determine the 2007 award winner.

The award winner will be announced and presented with a trophy during the 2007 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

OSU Assists State’s Outreach
Wednesday, May 16, 2007 (135 reads)

Just two states have higher proportions of grandparents raising their grandchildren than Oklahoma, emblematic of a startling national trend of close relatives having to substitute for birth parents as primary caregivers. The implications for children are unclear, but Oklahoma and other states have already reconsidered guardianship rights and are reevaluating the delivery of family services.

Research and outreach at Oklahoma State University, including a recent survey of grandparents across Oklahoma, is focused on helping the state ensure quality of services for non-traditional caregivers and children.
