OSU's aggressive stance in developing new technologies for its users makes the university an ideal candidate for involvement in early adoption. At an elegant reception in Houston, Texas on April 6, 2004, the OSU Alumni Association received the highest honor awarded by District IV of The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) with two Grand Gold Awards in the Division of Alumni Programming. The Association received the Grand Gold Award in the category “Best New Alumni Program” for the OSU Alumni Association’s Orange Connection Alumni Store. The internet-based http://www.orangeconnection.com"Orange Connection Alumni Store," launched in August of 2002, provides unique, OSU-branded items to alumni nationwide and serves to financially support the programs and services of the Association. “The on-line store has proved to be very popular. Over 50% of our alumni are living in states other than Oklahoma, and they bleed orange just as much as those in Stillwater. They typically can’t find OSU items in Seattle or Virginia. Now they can get OSU where they are.” commented Jean Erickson, Sr. Director of E-Services for the Association. Erickson also noted that the on-line store is showing steady growth and continued product expansion. “We even carry a Les Paul OSU-logo guitar… It’s a lot of fun… our alumni are loving it!” In addition, the Association also received the Grand Gold Award in the category “Best Student Program” for the 2003 Homecoming Philanthropy Can Mural project. Student Programs Director Anne Scott noted that “Our students had the task of coming up with a new philanthropy program to replace our old blood drive. I’m very glad that CASE recognized the creativity they showed in coming up with such a unique program.” Scott also said that the program was unusually successful in the way that it involved both students and alumni, and called positive attention to the University. To see pictures from the Can Mural project, and for more a more detailed story, http://www.orangeconnection.org/cgi-any/newspages.dll/pages?sitename=OKTMP&record=886&htmlfile=newspages3_homecoming.htm"click here." Other recent CASE awards received by the OSU Alumni Association include an award in 2002 for the Student Alumni Board Leadership Conference and in 2003 the Association’s Legacy Program received an award for Best New Membership Program. Very soon Oklahoma State students will no longer have an excuse to not be in shape. The $23 million renovation of the Colvin Center is nearing completion and set to open sometime in June 2004. The renovation includes the addition of about 90,000 square feet and the reconstruction of approximately 80,000 square feet. When combined with the untouched portion of the center, the total Colvin Center area comes to 244,000 square feet of state-of-the-art fitness and recreation space. The renovation, which was heavily influenced by student input, focused on satisfying three main needs:
  • More weight and fitness equipment and area (now more than 30,000 square feet).
  • More gyms (five more gyms added, for a total of 11).
  • A golf area (now includes a practice hitting area, putting greens, and a golf simulator).
Other highlights include a new outdoor pool, a four-lane jogging track on the mezzanine level and more multi-purpose, dance and aerobic areas. The main benefit to students is the additional space. “It won’t be so crowded,” said Kent Bunker, director of campus recreation. “Kids will be able to workout anytime between 6 [a.m.] and 12 [a.m.].” http://fp.okstate.edu/campusrec/home%20page/construction/construction_content.htm Click here for more information about the Colvin Center Reconstruction and to view an online video of the design.

The Cowboy Cricket Club may be searching for an agent if Hollywood gets wind of their success story. The fairytale began in the spring of 2001 when a few OSU students, who played regularly on the library lawn, desired to seek competition. The students contacted Tim Huff, manager of International Students and Scholars, who encouraged the idea. “They needed a place to practice, so we contacted Kent Bunker and he set them up on the old cross country fields,” Huff said. After a little practice and a three match series against the University of Oklahoma, players decided they wanted to go all the way – to the league level. And that’s just what they did. The team joined the Southwest Cricket Conference and began competing against city and collegiate teams from Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas. The team began visiting other cities for competitions, and last year they were able to pour a concrete “pitch” – or 60 foot strip of playing area – and host matches in Stillwater. What makes their story even more special is their Tri-State league championship won during the 2003 season – only their second season in competition.
