When the Oklahoma State Cowgirls take Eddie Sutton’s court next season, they will be under the direction of a new coaching staff. Kurt Budke, one of the most successful women’s coaches in the country, was officially introduced as the Cowgirls’ new coach in a press conference at Gallagher-Iba Arena Monday afternoon. Budke replaces former coach Julie Goodenough, who resigned two weeks ago after compiling a 23-61 record during her three years in Stillwater. While success is something the Cowgirls haven’t enjoyed in recent years, Budke said the Cowgirls must forget about the past and look toward the future, “Today is a new beginning,” Budke said. “It’s going to be a roller coaster ride for a while. I invite you to jump onboard with us because we’re going to build something special.” Budke brings with him an impressive résumé that began at Allen County Community College in Iola, Kan., where he led the Lady Red Devils to national prominence before moving to Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, for the 1993 season. During his stint at Trinity Valley, Budke’s teams won four national championships and finished as national runner-up twice. Budke’s 273-30 record at TVCC still ranks as the highest winning percentage in National Junior College Athletic Association history, and, currently, he is the youngest coach to have ever been inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame. Most recently, Budke held the reins at Louisiana Tech, where his teams posted an impressive 80-16 record and won two Western Athletic Conference championships. While at Louisiana Tech, Budke also guided the Lady Techsters to appearances in both the Sweet Sixteen and the Elite Eight during his five-year tenure. “He has been a highly successful coach at every level,” said OSU Athletics Director Harry Birdwell while directing Budke. “Kurt Budke met every significant criteria we had set.” After enjoying immense success at his previous stops, the move to Oklahoma State was only natural, Budke said. Budke, a native of Salina, Kan., grew up in the heart of the old Big 8 conference and said it has always been his dream to coach in the Midwest. “Every move that I have made in my career was for the opportunity to come back home to Big 12 country,” Budke said. “I am truly honored today.” To continue the story on the Cowgirls new head coach, Kurt Budke, http://www.ocolly.com/new_ocollycom/show_story.php?a_id=26017"click here".

OSU-DAC Helping Solve Global Pollution
Monday, March 28, 2005 (155 reads)

OSU-DAC Partnership Helping Solve Global Pollution Problem Caused by Munitions Salvage and TNT Production STILLWATER, Okla. – An Oklahoma State University research team working with the United States Army Defense Ammunition Center (DAC) in McAlester, Okla. has developed a functional prototype that uses only sunlight and a proprietary catalyst to detoxify water containing dissolved explosives created during the manufacture of TNT and when salvaging obsolete or unserviceable munitions. The device was demonstrated today during a news conference at OSU. Officials said it provides a simple, low-cost, but very effective way to deal with a global environmental challenge and that it has the potential to save the military millions of dollars. OSU System CEO and President David J. Schmidly said the breakthrough demonstrates the quality of OSU's research program, the benefit of partnering with DAC and the environmental and economic benefits that come from such partnerships. "This is a significant development that will go a long way toward solving one of the military's most pressing environmental challenges," Schmidly said. "OSU has some outstanding researchers, and we are proud to have been involved. We look forward to an Oklahoma company taking this technology to the next level." Dr. Jim Harmon, an OSU physicist who led the team of researchers and students, used a smaller, lab-sized version of the device to demonstrate the process today, but said it can easily be "ramped up" to handle much larger quantities of TNT-contaminated liquids. DAC officials said the technology comes at a critical time because America and other nations face severe environmental challenges due to de-commissioning of huge stockpiles of excess, obsolete or unserviceable munitions. "America currently has a stockpile of more than 400,000 tons of excess, obsolete or unserviceable munitions that must be destroyed," said James Q. Wheeler, DAC director. "The military services add another 50,000 tons every year, and almost every industrialized nation in the world has the same challenge." DAC's Science and Technology Advisor, Solim S.W. Kwak, said munitions can currently be destroyed in an environmentally sound way, but the process is expensive. Under its Resource Recovery and Recycling (R3) program, the U.S. military has sought ways to recycle munitions components. However, some demilitarization processes produce a substance called "pink water," which is water contaminated with TNT. Treating and de-toxifying pink water using current chemical and biologically based methods is slow, cumbersome and expensive. DAC contracted with Harmon and his team to investigate alternative methods. The team developed a photo-catalytic method in which material within the device is coated with a catalyst developed at OSU. When exposed to sunlight, the catalyst neutralizes pink and also "red water," which is another highly toxic liquid produced during the manufacture of TNT. "The best way to describe it is reverse photosynthesis," Harmon said. "The sunlight and catalyst create a reaction that turns nitro compounds into compounds such as ammonia. Actually, it would probably make a very good fertilizer." He added that the process works in ambient temperatures in any sunlit location. Special lights can be used on cloudy days. "Now we have a 'green' technology that uses sunlight to power chemical reactions to treat our munitions and explosives waste," said Larry R. Nortunen, associate director for technology at DAC. "It's very promising, and we are looking forward to further tests and development." Kwak said the device also will be very useful as the United States again begins producing TNT at a facility in Virginia. America has not produced TNT since the 1980s due to excess stocks and the red water challenge. Since then, the U.S. has purchased TNT from international sources. Harmon said a much larger device could handle as much as 15,000 gallons of contaminated liquid per day, about the amount of red water produced when making 10,000 pounds of TNT. Speakers at today's demonstration included Lewis D. Walker, former deputy assistant secretary of the Army for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health. Harmon said the next step is to conduct tests on a larger scale and work with an Oklahoma company that will mass produce the devices.

The most comprehensive update of the Stillwater campus master plan in two decades is under way. OSU students, faculty and staff are encouraged to provide their input. The University’s tradition of campus planning was established during the 1920s under President Henry G. Bennett. Decisions for the next 20 years and those immediately facing the campus, such as the locations of a multimodal transportation facility and a science and technology research center, will be influenced by the new master plan. “Like its predecessors, the new master plan will successfully marry OSU’s heritage, history, culture and long-standing values with its current mission, needs, status and strategic plan,” said David Schmidly, OSU System CEO and President. Visit http://osu.okstate.edu/cmp/ for a detailed schedule of meetings. The special website will also feature updates on the planning process throughout the year as well as a list of steering committee members who welcome your input and feedback. Oklahoma State concluded the NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Savvis Center in St. Louis by crowning five champions and finishing with a school record 153 points. The championships is the 33rd NCAA wrestling title for the Cowboys and their first three-peat since Art Griffith led Oklahoma A&M to three straight titles from 1954-56. Oklahoma State tied an NCAA record by crowning five individual champions. Iowa did it twice with the last time coming during the 1997 championships. Michigan finished in second-place with 83 points. The 70 point margin also set a school record for largest winning margin and is the second highest margin of victory in NCAA history. “This team gave the extra effort in every way,” head coach John Smith said. “In every tough-tough situation, we excelled. I can name a number of situations throughout this tournament that made the difference for us putting the points that we put up, putting five guys in the finals and winning five championships.” “We had our very best performance of the season at the Big 12 and NCAA Championships. The Oklahoma State University [OSU] Foundation announced bequests totaling nearly $1M from the estate of the late Horace and Norma Cleveland of San Antonio, Tex. This gift will provide funding for approximately 18 students to receive the prestigious President’s Distinguished Scholarship at OSU. Kirk Jewell, President and CEO of the OSU Foundation noted, “OSU strives to be the university of choice for top students, and we understand that scholarship opportunities are a critical factor in attracting leading scholars. We greatly appreciate the resources that the Cleveland bequest will create to support our premier students now and for years to come. ” The President's Distinguished Scholarship, one of OSU’s most highly desired undergraduate scholarships, is a four-year $2,200 per year scholarship funding tuition and books for aspiring scholars. Students are selected based upon exemplary academic, leadership and community accomplishments. A generous benefactor, Horace Cleveland graduated from OSU’s Spears School of Business in 1929. He recognized the financial need of many students, and later in life he graciously agreed to support to the University and its students through an estate gift. Mr. Cleveland served in several philanthropic capacities including the Masons, Friday Morning Group, Rotary Club, Knife and Fork Club, Service Corp of Retired Executives and was a member and president of the Federal Executive Association. In 1968, he received the Commissioner’s Citation from the Social Security Administration; it is the Agency’s highest award. Born in Odon, Ind., Norma Cleveland committed her life to service of America’s armed forces as a nurse with the U.S. Navy for 22 years. She attended Indiana University and received a B.S. in nursing education in 1953. She received her Registered Nurse certification in 1939, and was chief of nursing service at Portsmouth, N.H.; Subic Bay, Phillipines; and Corpus Christi, Tex. She passed away in December 2003.
