Oklahoma State's equestrian team advanced 17 riders from the regional championships Sunday at Texas A&M to compete in the zone championships in Canyon, Texas. The Cowgirls were led by Emily Harison and Cheryl Adamson with their pair of victories in Intermediate Flat and Intermediate Horsemanship, respectively. OSU's track and field team had a record-breaking performance at the UTA Invitational Saturday at Arlington, Texas. Senior Halee Prickett set a school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 15.09 meter, also good enough for an NCAA Regional Provisional. Prickett also set the school record in the discus with a distance of 46.12 meters. Freshman April Hart earned an NCAA Regional Provisional in the javelin event with a throw of 34'' 70". Oklahoma State's No. 43-ranked men's tennis team beat sixth-ranked Rice and improved to 10-2 in front of a large crowd at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston this weekend. Up to this point, Rice was 17-0. Oklahoma State's soccer team picked up a win and a tie Saturday afternoon in Dallas. The Cowgirls tied Big 10 foe Minnesota 1-1 and shutout LSU 3-0.

Basketball Means Much to Overseas Soldiers
Tuesday, March 30, 2004 (93 reads)

The following e-mail was received today from Lt. Col. Bill Gray in Afghanistan, who says that many OSU fans in that nation have been cheering for the Cowboys. They include soldiers from the 45th Infantry Brigade, Camp Phoenix, who are training the new Afghan National Army, and soldiers at the Office of Military Cooperation where Col. Gray works. "Some of us caught the game early this (Sunday) morning," he writes. "You may not realize the significance that this achievement back home holds for many of us on duty here overseas. Please pass on to the AD, Coach Sutton and all the players --- congratulations on making it into the Final Four, and we're confident that you'll go all the way to a National NCAA Basketball Championship! We are all proud of the athletic and other achievements of Oklahoma State University."

OSU Gets Two Goldwater Scholars
Tuesday, March 30, 2004 (106 reads)

The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The scholarship covers costs of tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a maximum of $7,500 per year. This makes 12 Goldwater Scholars for OSU. Our latest student stars are: 1. Ryan Scott -- a junior National Merit Scholar from Stillwater, majoring in math and physics. Ryan is already an accomplished researcher, having completed two Wentz Research Projects and high level work with OSU faculty. As a result, he recently won an international award, the IBM-Zerner Fellowship, which is usually granted only to graduate students. He recently was selected to present his work at the Undergraduate Research Day at the State Capitol. 2. Nick Rasmussen -- a sophomore zoology major from Tekamah, Nebraska. Nick has conducted significant research on the social behavior of collared lizards and the impact of game fish stocking on aquatic invertebrate populations. He is a strong environmentalist and works for Habitat for Humanity and the Student Government Association. This summer, he intends to travel with 19 other OSU students to Cambridge, England, for a course on "Darwin and the History of Science," taught by OSU and Cambridge faculty and OSU President David Schmidly.

OSU Announces 14th Truman Scholar
Monday, March 29, 2004 (114 reads)

As OSU celebrates a trip to basketball's "Final Four" and a national wrestling championship, the university also is building a strong tradition in national scholarship competitions. OSU announced March 23 that Joe St. John, an OSU junior from Bixby, is the university's 14th Truman Scholar. The Truman Scholarship is one of the nation's most prestigious national honors. The three-year, $26,000 scholarship is given to students who are entering public service and is awarded to only 80 U.S. college juniors every year. Scholars are chosen from approximately 1,200 nominees. St. John learned about the award this morning when OSU President David Schmidly and several OSU professors paid a surprise visit to his classroom. OSU has had nine Truman Scholars in the last eleven years and 13 overall since the program started in 1980. The university's scholar development program has been recognized as one of the best in the nation and also produced a Rhodes Scholar, two Marshall Scholars, 10 Goldwater Scholars and two Udall Scholars. You can read more about Joe and see some photos from the announcement at http://www2.okstate.edu/pio/14thtruman.html"http://www2.okstate.edu/pio/14thtruman.html"

Governor Touts OSU Researcher's Work as Good Reason for Funding Endowed Chairs
Tuesday, March 16, 2004 (114 reads)

Governor Brad Henry says OSU Professor Kathy Kocan is a prime example of why Oklahoma should continue to fund the state's Endowed Chairs program. Currently, the state has yet to match $44 million in private donations that have been committed to the chairs. Speaking at Higher Education day Tuesday at the State Capitol, Henry said it is "inexcusable for the state not to take advantage of these opportunities" and added that this "kind of investment makes sense and allows Oklahoma to play in the major leagues in biomedical, energy, and agricultural research and development." Henry introduced Kocan, the Walter R. Sitlington Endowed Chair in Food Animal Research in the College of Veterinary Medicine. He said Kocan's years of research at OSU have garnered $4.12 million in federal funds, as well as four patents.Henry says outside research dollars are leveraged at least five times.

What began originally in 1929 as a fund-raiser for the university marching band has evolved into a professional production with the proceeds now benefiting the School of Journalism and Broadcasting. Varsity Revue has definitely changed over the past 75 years, but the tradition remains intact. You sent us some great memories from past Varsity Review productions. Read the stories at the bottom of this page! It’s not too late to post your story directly to the Varsity Review section of Class Notes. Just click the “Add/Maintain My Notes” icon at the top of the Class Notes page. Make sure you choose the “Varsity Review” category for your VR story. Our next request is for your favorite memories or experiences of the OSU Ring Tradition You can send them to us at info@orangeconnection.org. We can’t wait to read what you send us!

I was honored to be named the last "Varsity Revue Vicky"!!! Yes, I was in the 1976 Varsity Revue that had the theme of "Headlines." As a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, we combined with Farmhouse to practically "blow away" the competition with our newspaper headline…THE FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT!!!! I think we won everything that year! I was privileged to be the "NEW HEART" that first got rejected because I just couldn't fit in with the red blood cells and white blood cells dancing to the tune of Jesus Christ's Superstar "So you are the Star." I sang a song about being rejected to the tune of "One Less Bell to Answer", (Now that I'm rejected … catch the tune?) But I then saved the day by pumping out white blood cells to fight off bacteria to the tune of "The 1812 Overture"… cannon booms and all! The gentlemen of Farmhouse looked so cute in their tights! I must mention that Rick Lane was the OLD HEART that I replaced and Randy Ross was the transplant patient. That was one of my most favorite memories during my time at OSU!!! Thanks for letting me share this with you and going down memory lane! Susan K. Steele BS '77, MS '81, DO '88 Tulsa, OK. P.S. The Varsity Revue Victor award that year went to Robin Wantland.

In 1965, when girls, especially, did not have cars on campus, my sorority sister (Pat Gallagher) and I were looking for a ride to Varsity Review Chorus Girl tryouts for which we had been chosen to represent ADPi. It was raining, which would have put a real damper on our glamour hair styles that had been appropriately teased and sprayed. Pat's boyfriend had chapter meeting and couldn't take us but bravely offered us his car. Pat ran in with the last minute good fortune and we dashed downstairs to load into our wheels. As we settled in, a quick look pointed out a bit of a problem. It was stick shift! We exchanged looks of horror confirming neither of us had driven stick before. We had no time to fiddle around with details, so she said “I think I can operate the clutch if you can do the gears.” Done! Fortunately, the car was pointed the right way and off we lurched. This was not working as smoothly as we’d hoped. With his poor car dying each time we made a lurch we had not even made it past the ADPi House. People passing by were amazed at how we got his car to jolt and lunge forward like that and only move about a foot each time. By this time, we only had a few minutes to make it to tryouts so I rolled down the window and pleaded for help from an innocent boy rushing down the sidewalk in the rain. With both of us hysterically talking at the same time he finally got the message we wanted him to drive us the two blocks down the street to the auditorium. Though it made no sense to him, he obliged, expertly operated both the clutch and gear shift as smooth as satin, parked the car, said his good-byes, and we scrambled in the back door of the auditorium just in time, with our glamour hair-dos mostly in place. We never knew who our rescuer was. (Later, rehearsals were made by foot!) One of many great memories at OSU. Sandy Turley Bennett

I was an ADPi. We did VR with the Sigma Chis (I think) and we were teeth. During the opening act we had a “patient” (Susan Lane) sitting in a chair like she was at the dentist’s office. Myself and a Sigma Chi did backhand springs across the front of the stage. The guy went too far and his feet landed in Susan's stomach. The dental chair was on wheels so they just wheeled her off the stage. The guy's leg was bleeding but he continued through the entire show. Susan had the wind completely knocked out of her but was fine. Apparently very few people in the audience saw it but we had a good laugh for a while. Ahhh, memories! Dena A. Gawey

During my senior year (first senior year) at OSU I participated in varsity review (Spring of ’89). I was an AXO and we teamed up with Farmhouse that year. Several of my friends were participating and I mentioned that if they needed another person to call me. I really did not anticipate a call since I had no singing or dancing experience. Much to my chagrin someone dropped out at the very next rehearsal and they were desperate. While it took some effort to learn the lyrics and the dance moves, I really enjoyed the complete experience. We ended up winning first place and several other honors. I had never been a part of a "team" that won something in such a big way. It was by far one of my favorite memories from my senior year. I will never forget my father telling me "I didn't know you could do any of that stuff" after he attended a performance. I responded that I didn't know I could do any of it either! My only regret was that I did not purchase the videotaped performance. I would love to prove to my husband that I had my moment in the spotlight! Is there a way to get my hands on a copy of that tape? Gina (Laman) Hunsberger Class of '90

Such fond memories! I remember in 1970 a group of us from Willard Hall did a medley from "Hair." Jan Riggs played piano. Robyn (can't remember her last name) and Nancy Bowles were part of the "cast." (Nancy and Robyn subsequently transferred to OU.) I sang the "Frank Mills" song. What great fun. Ardoth Hassler B.S. 1972

As a transfer sophomore I tried out for and won a spot with my singles act in the Varsity Revue. My talent was an acrobatic dance (way ahead of my time). At the dress rehearsal the director decided that I could not use the whole stage and insisted that I must perform in front of the curtain! Since I was a rather timid person I docilely went along. But my new steady boyfriend really let him know about it. It was definitely scary to have my space changed so much, but it went well. I didn't fall off the stage, thank goodness. Kappa Delta won a spot in the same show after several consecutive years winning the Varsity Revue. We did it again, and took best overall act of the show. I was on the "OSU track team" in our act. Those were two memorable nights. The funny thing was that a guy came to my dressing room after the final performance with a camera. He didn't come right out and say what he wanted and I was very wary. It scared him off. I learned later he was the photographer for the Agivator, wanting to put my picture in the magazine! Rita Matthews Picture is from the 1949 Varsity Revue. Thanks to Special Collections for helping us find some pictures!

Where can you find the largest group of orange-blooded, enthusiastic students ready to talk about OSU? Student Alumni Board of course. SAB members, who take pride in their OSU spirit, dedication and knowledge of campus and activities, act as ambassadors for OSU at numerous recruiting events on campus and across the state. One of their main responsibilities is assisting the OSU Office of High School and College Relations by giving tours to prospective students every Monday thru Friday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. “The SAB members provide us with an invaluable source of support in the form of serving as our daily campus tour guides and as serving as student ambassadors at all of our special recruitment programs,” said Donald Pitchford, interim director of High School and College Relations at OSU. “We are truly fortunate to have this high caliber group of students represent our campus and more specifically, the recruitment division, to literally thousands of prospective students and their families on an annual basis." The opportunity to serve as a tour guide is one of the most common reasons for applying to SAB. “I toured lots of other campuses and I was dead set on going to another school,” said Katie Oden, Student Alumni Board’s executive director. “You couldn’t have paid me enough to go to OSU. “But then I came to OSU and our tour guide, Matt, walked us around and told us where to eat and even taught us which way the “S” was supposed to be. He knew so much about the campus. We even saw some of our friends. The best part was that I actually felt like a person rather than a number and like our tour guide knew what he was talking about. The other college tours I took had tour guides who didn’t know what they were talking about. Those tours inspired me and I wanted to give tours so I could make others feel the same way I felt.” New ambassadors are selected every spring through an application and interview process. Thursday, March 11, 2004 (124 reads)

Brooks & Dunn will headline The ShowDown at Oklahoma State University April 3 at 8 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Stillwater stop of the “Red Dirt Road Tour” also features Joe Nichols and Josh Turner. The ShowDown is the first concert to be held in Gallagher-Iba Arena since its recent renovation and is sponsored and coordinated by OSU’s Student Union Activities Board in conjunction with Special Events and Campus Life. “We are especially excited to welcome Ronnie Dunn on his first return to Oklahoma since his recent induction to the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame,” said Chris McCall, SUAB president. “There is no better place to have a ‘welcome-back concert’ than Gallagher-Iba.” Built in 1938, the historic building has undergone a massive $55 million construction project over the past few years. Gallagher-Iba Arena, lovingly called the “rowdiest arena in the country,” will hold approximately 9,000 for this event. In January 2004, SUAB held a “Name that Concert Contest” to name the concert series. Nick Gregory, a marketing senior at OSU, won the contest with his unique and inventive entry – The ShowDown. SUAB plans to organize The ShowDown each spring, offering new and popular artists to OSU students and the surrounding communities. At OSU, SUAB exists to provide a carefully planned set of programs and services that will add to the educational, social, cultural and recreational experiences. The operations of SUAB are entirely planned and organized by students for students. For further information, please contact Sarah Conrad at 405.744.8977 or at sarahvconrad@mac.com.
