Charlie Eitel of Naples, Florida, Professor Fran D. Jabara of Wichita, Kansas and Willard R. Sparks of Memphis, Tennessee will be inducted into the OSU Alumni Hall of Fame on Feb. 25, 2005. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed by the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association. It recognizes outstanding lifetime achievement in society and professional life, as well as contributions to the advancement of OSU. Charlie Eitel is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Over his career he has established a reputation as a superb business executive employing innovative management practices. He is currently chairman and chief executive officer of Simmons Company, one of the largest branded bedding companies in the world. The Atlanta-based Simmons Company boasts $1 billion in worldwide sales, employs more than 3,200 people and operates 18 plants throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Eitel began his career in the floor-coverings industry in 1971 as a sales trainee for Coronet Carpets where he held several sales and management positions, including vice president of marketing, before being named president in 1980. The following year he was named president, chief operating officer, and became part owner of Carriage Carpets where he successfully grew the company’s revenues from $6 million to $75 million during his five year tenure. From 1987 to 1993, Eitel was president and chief executive officer of Collins and Aikman Floorcoverings where he once again served as the catalyst to bring the company to the forefront in the carpet industry. Prior to joining Simmons, Eitel served as president and chief operating officer of Interface Inc., a leading global manufacturer of floor-coverings, interior fabrics, and architectural raised floors. During his six-year tenure, Interface’s sales grew from $635 million to $1.3 billion and operating income more than tripled during the same period. Considered an authority on leadership Eitel is often quoted in professional journals and asked to speak to industry executives. He is the author of several books, Eitel Time: Turnaround Secrets, 1995, and Mapping Your Legacy, A Hook It Up Journey, 1998. Also in print is 84 Quotes, which is a pocketsize booklet of value quotes by Charlie. Eitel is active in many civic and professional organizations, including World Presidents’ Organization, International Business Fellows, Business Executives for National Security, and was named to Who’s Who in American Business. He serves on the boards of Duke Realty (DRE) and American Fidelity Assurance. He has received the “Spirit of Life” award from the City of Hope Cancer Research Center in Pasadena, California. He also serves on the board of The George West Mental Health Foundation. Always a supporter of his alma mater, Eitel is a past member of the OSU Foundation Board of Governors and in 2003 helped establish and participated in the first CEO Day program for students in the Spears School of Business. He recently chaired the fundraising efforts for a scholarship in the name of B. Curtis Hamm, a former professor. He is a life member of the OSU Alumni Association. Eitel and his wife, Cindy, currently reside in Naples, Florida. They have three grown children, Jennifer, Stephanie and Chuck. After serving 3 years in the U.S. Army during World War II, Professor Fran D. Jabara earned his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University and completed his graduate studies at Northwestern University. He is a certified public accountant. Jabara’s name has become synonymous with excellence in education and entrepreneurship. He joined the faculty at Wichita State University in 1949 and served the university for 40 years. During that time he was appointed Distinguished Professor and served as Dean of the College of Business Administration. The university has recognized him with many honors and in 1996, dedicated Jabara Hall. Compelled by his advocacy of the American Enterprise System and his firm belief in the importance of the role of the entrepreneur to the growth of that system, he founded one of the first Centers for Entrepreneurship at Wichita State in 1977. In 1984, he was co-founder of the Association of Collegiate Entrepreneurs (ACE), then the largest national organization for collegiate students interested in entrepreneurship, with members in all 50 states and 20 foreign countries. Fran is the founder of a private equity and investment company, Jabara Ventures Group, as well as the Jabara Family Foundation. He has served as a member of the board of directors of numerous corporations. Even though retired from teaching, Jabara continues to be actively involved in entrepreneurial development by assisting other universities in establishing academic programs and by speaking worldwide on entrepreneurship. For the past fifteen years, he has worked with his son Harvey in the venturing business. In 1991 he was the founder of Project H.O.P.E. + E. Each year Project H.O.P.E + E. hosts VE2NTUREKIDS, a program designed to communicate ingredients of success through entrepreneurship to minority fifth graders. Among his many honors and awards are the prestigious Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education, the George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation and the 1991 Ernst Young, Merrill Lynch Inc. Magazine Award for Entrepreneur of the Year. He was a 1997 Laureate for the Wichita Business Hall of Fame. In 1999, he and his wife Geri were awarded the Cardinal Newman Medal from Newman University. In 2001, he was awarded the Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award by the College of Business Administration at Wichita State University. Wichita State University awarded the President’s Medal to Fran in the Fall of 2002. In 2003, the Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce named Fran Uncommon Citizen. The U.S. Small Business Administration has selected Fran as 2003 Financial Services Advocate of the Year. On May 19, 2003, Fran was awarded the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award by the University of North Dakota. Fran’s interest in creating new ventures was evident even as a student at Oklahoma State, where he created his own photography business and worked with a team to establish a chapter of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He cites Dr. Eugene Swearingen as having impacted his studies and research as an OSU student. In 1996 Jabara was inducted into the OSU College of Business Hall of Fame and is a member of the college Associates group. He continues to support OSU and higher education through scholarships in accounting and a Professorship in Entrepreneurship yet to be awarded. He is a life member of the OSU Alumni Association. Fran and Geri are the parents of three children, daughters Leesa Jabara and Lori Simmons, and a son, Harvey, and have three grandsons. Willard R. Sparks was born in Dibble, Oklahoma and spent much of his boyhood working on the family’s grain and livestock farm. He enrolled at Oklahoma State University and graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He completed his education in agricultural economics with a Ph.D. from Michigan State University. In 1963, he and his family moved to Memphis where he joined Cook Industries as director of economic research. He later became senior executive vice president and director of Cook’s worldwide Agriproducts Group. The highlight of his 14-year career at Cook was the role he played in orchestrating the first big sale of U. S. grain to Russia. In 1977, Sparks founded Sparks Commodities, later named Sparks Companies Inc., where research analysts and consulting specialists served hundreds of the world’s leading agribusinesses. In 2003, the firm was sold to a publicly owned British company. Sparks was affiliated with Refco, LLC and a part owner of Cattlco Inc. and Vining-Sparks. He held extensive farming and ranching interests. In recognition of his expertise in the field of agricultural economics, he was appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture in 1997 to serve a two-year term on the U.S.D.A.’s Advisory Committee on Emerging Markets. For the past two years he served as an officer and director of the International Brangus Breeders Association headquartered in San Antonio. In Memphis, Sparks was a respected community leader who devoted particular attention to supporting education, sports and the arts. He was a friend and supporter of the University of Memphis as well as his alma mater, Oklahoma State University. At OSU, he was a founder of the Oklahoma State 21st Century Center for Agriculture and Renewable Natural Resources, a former member of the OSU Foundation Board of Governors, and since 1997, a member of the Dean's Advisory Committee of the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Moreover, Sparks and other members of the Sparks Companies staff served as speakers at many of the Advanced Cattle Management Seminars sponsored by OSU. He co-chaired the Bringing Dreams to Life campaign for the agricultural division and endowed a chair in agricultural economics. In1998, the Willard Sparks Beef Research Center was opened. Sparks has provided scholarships to students in the OSU Department of Agricultural Economics, scholarships to Dibble High School graduates attending OSU and has established a President's Distinguished Scholarship in honor of his parents. Sparks received the 1987 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the OSU Alumni Association, the 1996 Distinguished Agriculture Alumnus Award from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and the 1997 Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Animal Science. In 1998, Sparks received an honorary doctorate in social science at OSU, the ninth person since 1927 to receive such an honorary degree. He was a life member of the OSU Alumni Association.

Gift to Build Advanced 3D Visualization Laboratory for the Study of Geology and Fund Scholarships and Fellowships STILLWATER, OK (Feb. 7, 2005) – Oklahoma State University [OSU] today received a $2.3 million gift from Devon Energy Corporation of Oklahoma City to create a world-class geological laboratory and establish scholarship programs in geology and engineering. The 3,300-square-foot Devon Energy Geology Laboratory will be located in the Boone Pickens School of Geology at the Noble Research Center on the Stillwater campus. The lab will be one of the most advanced in the nation and will embrace teaching methods that involve a unique industry-university partnership in training the geologists of tomorrow. The $1.5 million lab will become operational in the fall 2005. “We thank Devon Energy for this generous leadership gift, which will provide our faculty with an exceptional teaching laboratory and our students with an unrivaled learning experience,” said Dr. David J. Schmidly, OSU System CEO and President. “With the new technologically advanced laboratory and resources, the Devon Laboratory will help OSU transform the university’s geology program into one of the best in the country.” The Devon Laboratory will facilitate interaction between student recipients and Devon geoscientists working on real-world projects in the field. This unique industry-university partnership supports OSU’s collaborative and problem-solving tradition in geological studies and will sharpen students’ analytical skills. “As we enhance the lives of our students through leading-edge facilities and increased scholarships, they will in turn create innumerable benefits for business, industry and our society as a whole,” Schmidly said. Devon Chief Executive Officer Larry Nichols said the company is grateful for the opportunity to strengthen its partnership with OSU. Nichols, who holds a degree in geology, said today’s geoscientists are tackling the most technologically challenging barriers the energy industry has ever encountered. “Much of North America’s oil and gas has been discovered, and those reserves are maturing and on the decline,” Nichols said. “While significant reservoirs remain, many are deep below the Earth’s surface or locked within complex geological structures that have eluded our reach for decades.” “Industry and teaching institutions must continue pushing the limits of technology to keep pace with the world’s growing demand for energy,” he said. “Joint projects like the Devon Laboratory are critical in our effort to prepare future geoscientists for the formidable challenges that lie ahead.” The laboratory will include an advanced graphic station, screens, projectors and Ethernet links enabling the use of cutting-edge technology with real-time, high-speed Internet access. In addition, two-way communication between the laboratory and Devon research teams through the use of SmartBoards will enhance interaction between Devon geoscientists and OSU students and faculty. “The Devon Laboratory will make a huge impact on the Boone Pickens School of Geology at a critical time when we are developing plans to grow our faculty and our undergraduate and graduate programs,” said Dr. Peter Sherwood, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. “The new scholarships will help us attract the best students into our growing undergraduate program while the graduate fellowship program will make a substantial impact on our plans to expand the scope of our graduate program.” “The Devon Laboratory will be pivotal to future developments in the school,” Sherwood said. “It will provide new space which is essential because nearly two-thirds of the undergraduate courses in the School of Geology have a laboratory component. The unique partnership that we will develop with Devon Energy will shape the training of our undergraduate and graduate geologists, allowing OSU to embrace new opportunities in geology education and research.” In addition, the establishment of the Devon Energy Scholars Program will ensure the professional, personal and academic development of students through the funding of graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships for geology. While most of the Devon gift is going to the Boone Pickens School of Geology, the Devon Energy Scholars Program also will provide undergraduate scholarships to engineering students. “We are excited to receive this generous contribution that will establish more than a scholarship program, but truly an enrichment program that will allow us to recruit the best and the brightest and train these students to be future leaders for companies like Devon Energy,” said Dr. Karl Reid, Dean of the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. Devon Energy Corporation is the largest U.S.-based independent oil and gas producer and one of the largest independent processors of natural gas and natural gas liquids in North America. The company believes that investing in these and other charitable initiatives will help the people, organizations and communities in areas where they operate to grow and succeed.
