OSU Chemical engineering senior Cassie Mitchell was recently named to the elite first list of the USA Today’s All-USA College Academic Team. The 22-year-old of Warner, Okla., was named to the top 20 list for the invention of a popcorn popper that suspends the kernels in air to teach children chemical engineering principles. The idea for the invention came from Mitchell’s work with ChemKidz – a community service organization made up of mostly chemical engineers who go to elementary schools or engineering fairs and do engineering experiments. “We try to make it really fun and exciting for the kids,” Mitchell said. Because most of their experiments were chemical-based, Mitchell and her mentor – Randy Lewis – decided to create an engineering-based experiment. And they thought a popcorn popper was the answer. The USA Today judges agreed. “Something that stands out about [the award] is that more than two-thirds of the recipients were from private, very elite schools,” Mitchell said. “I think it’s awesome that a public university like OSU has such outstanding faculty and outstanding departments that students such as myself can have the opportunity to win an award like this. “It shows how good a school we have and it says a lot for the chemical engineering department here.” Mitchell, who gives credit to the OSU chemical engineering department, to her parents and to God, will graduate in May and plans to attend graduate school. She hopes to eventually work for a major medical or pharmaceutical company as a research or design engineer.
