Have you ever wondered how far the OSU alumni network reaches? Joan Chadwick Hubbard found an answer to this question while traveling from her home in Texas to the Czech Republic in December 2004. While waiting for a tour bus in Prague, Joan (BS ’68, MS ’83, Ed.D. ’85) struck up a conversation with a young lady from Korea. It didn’t take very long for these two people to determine they had something in common: Oklahoma State University. Kyungwon (Kay) Baik attended OSU for one year (1999-2000) as an exchange student in English Education. To make this chance meeting even more amazing, Kay lived in Wentz Hall, as did Joan during her undergraduate years. Kay graduated from the Ewha Women’s University and is currently an Assistant Manager for Merrill Lynch in Seoul. After retiring from the University System of Georgia, Joan is serving as an Executive Lecturer in the Department of Management at the University of North Texas in Denton. This picture shows Kay and Joan doing the “O” and “S” sign in front of the castle in Cesky Krumlov.

The Kamm Leadership House, located in Kamm Hall, is a group of residents gathered into one community who wish to improve their service, leadership, and citizenship skills. In the first full year as an active affinity living group, the Leadership House had 40 participants, 3 of which did not live in the complex. It was established in the fall of 2002, and successfully began in the fall of 2003. The Kamm Leadership House works with several organizations throughout the year to raise money for and support different philanthropies within the community. These events include Habitat for Humanity’s Shack-a-Thon, Into the Streets, The Big Event, and the Humane Society of Stillwater, to name a few. The first project this group of students tackled was Light the Night, a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In 5 days, they hoped to raise $250, but by day 5 they had increased their goal daily, and raised $1300. The group also came to the aid of a local family who had lost a baby girl after several surgeries, which were not covered by insurance. Members camped out in November for one week, hoping to raise money and awareness for the family. OSU faculty, staff, and students donated $1250 in pocket change to help the family This year, the group continued to fundraise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by selling O-State bears. They also camped out on Library Lawn for 3 days asking for spare change. Members, Chelsea Thompson, Ken Dail, and Kyle Nagy dedicated more than 50 hours a piece in that time. The group set a goal of $2,500 and once again exceeded their goal by raising $5,269. There is only so much you can fit into a backpack for a strenuous climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. That didn’t stop Dr. Raja Basu, Oklahoma State University-Tulsa Vice President for Academic Affairs, from adding an OSU flag to his list of necessities. Spending his holiday break doing something many people only dream about, Basu trekked to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and kept a promise he’d made to OSU President and System CEO David Schmidly. Basu said that when Schmidly learned of his planned Dec.19 trip, he encouraged the climber to take an OSU flag and plant it atop the mountain. Basu couldn’t resist the challenge. “When President Schmidly suggested planting the OSU flag at the top, I joked that I didn’t think they‘d let me leave it there,” Basu said with a laugh. Rising 19,340 feet above the African plain, Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most massive extinct volcanoes in the world.

For many students and alumni, the cost of attending college can leave them with numerous loans. Keeping track of and paying all of them can at times be chaotic. Loan consolidation is an option to help manage that education debt. With interest rates at the lowest point in years, and the government looking to change its policies, consolidating your student loans in order to reduce loan debt and lock in a low, fixed interest rate is something to be heavily considered. Each year many students receive a new loan with a differing, variable interest rate. Consolidating all of these loans would put all of them into one payment with a fixed rate, making payments more convenient. For students who wish to consolidate while still in school, Direct Loans will work with them. For alumni that have student loans to pay off, they can consolidate using http://www.consolidation.nelnet.net/default.asp?bid=OSUALUM"Nelnet", a corporate partner with the OSUAA, as well as several other companies. It’s important to look at the different options with these companies and ensure that consolidating will not cause you to lose any benefits that come with your loans. Most companies are very up front in letting you know if you will lose benefits, however; if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For more information concerning loan consolidations visit http://www.okstate.edu/finaid/"OSU Scholarship and Financial Aid".

The OSU Foundation announced the gifts Thursday. The senior Bankston was a 1953 dairy production graduate and a member of the award-winning Dairy Cattle Judging Team. Higher Education Bond Issue

Gov. Brad Henry says the Higher Education Bond Issue should be the Legislature's top priority. The $500 million bond issue would be paid with proceeds from the Oklahoma Lottery. University and college presidents who joined Henry for a press conference Thursday say record enrollments, outdated and overcrowded classrooms and laboratories and the need to improve research facilities to boost the state's ability to compete globally are good reasons to support the first statewide higher education bond issue since 1992. Henry said the bond proposal will have an economic impact of almost $740 million and create about 4,000 construction jobs statewide. You can find more at http://www.governor.state.ok.us/
